The Memphis Police Department fired a sixth officer Friday for his role in the events leading to the death of Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man who was beaten by police officers and died three days later. The officer, Preston Hemphill, was placed on leave at the start of the department’s investigation. MPD announced his termination Friday, nearly a month after Nichols was beaten. The department said Hemphill violated policies including personal conduct, truthfulness, compliance with Taser regulations, compliance with uniform regulations, and a policy governing inventory and recovered property.
