There is a lot of politics involved in the way dangerous criminals are returned to the streets by trial judges and the appellate court. Jamaica is a small country of fewer than three million people; it had for decades a single University with its main campus in mona and other Campuses in Trinidad and Barbados.
The sad reality is that that single institution of higher learning has been responsible for educating most of the nation’s leaders. Even if that institution were the most moral, most judicious, its alums would still be able to reach out to each other to corrupt the political and judicial process.
So when we see dangerous criminals out on the streets right after they have been convicted of violent felonies, we may ask how is this possible?
Don’t ask! People know people who know people. Some people are naïve in still believing that these judges who are letting those violent felons back onto the streets are somehow moral, upstanding jurists.
I don’t. I know better. The system thrives on the trusting nature of the people who naively believe that people in positions of power are worthy of trust and adoration.
There are no two ways about the fact that I have been a vocal critic of the judges who continue to use their offices to stymie the efforts of law enforcement, more importantly, to subvert and jeopardize the nation’s security and expose citizens to violence and death.
Since the politicians are direct beneficiaries of this corruption, they will not do anything to fix it. So these corrupt practices are left to fester, Judges left to operate as they please, loopholes left open so that the upper crust may use them as they see fit.
Just this April, the Court of Appeals threw out the conviction of Jamaica’s former most wanted, Christopher Dog Paw Linton, and a crony who was serving time since 2013 on gun charges and shooting at police officers.
This court has been on a tear when it comes to disturbing the decisions of trial courts. Whatever the reason behind that decision not to let the decision stand, whether money changed hands or friends called in favors, we may never know because the entire system is a corrupt shit-show.
One thing is certain; even a broken clock is correct twice daily; whether we believe in karma or that the universe always gets it right is immaterial.
Christopher Dog Paw Linton went right back to his old ways, and this time, the police left no doubt that he was firing guns at them.
Christopher Dog Paw Linton met his maker today after he engaged the police in a shootout and lost.
Thank you, JCF.
You judges thought you were doing him a favor; you should have left him where he was; you are a disgrace to our country.
